Violumas Successfully Designs and Manufactures UV LED Modules for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory’s Multi-Energy Electron Gun
Violumas is proud to announce the successful design and manufacturing of a customized UV LED module for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).
The module has been integrated into AFRL’s Multi-Energy Electron Gun system, which simulates the harsh space environment—including high-energy electron and ion radiation, intense ultraviolet exposure, thermal cycling, and vacuum conditions—to ensure the reliable operation of space instrumentation.

To meet AFRL’s stringent irradiance requirements, the Violumas engineering team conducted comprehensive optical simulations using advanced software tools.
By importing the electron gun’s CAD model into the simulation, and applying accurate material properties for internal components—primarily stainless steel, copper, and gold—we carefully analyzed the UV photon reflection within the system.
After evaluating various LED placements, spacing, and power configurations, we delivered an optimized solution that maximized irradiance on the photoelectrode surface.

Based on these simulation results, Violumas developed a highly reliable UV COB module, featuring our proprietary 3P UV chips combined with a Pillar MCPCB, delivering industry-leading thermal resistance.
The module is also equipped with a 90-degree quartz primary optical lens, TVS protection components, an NTC thermistor for real-time PCB temperature monitoring, and a user-friendly terminal block for easy integration.

For this advanced aerospace application, product reliability and stability were paramount. Violumas’ dedicated team worked closely with the client to deliver a solution tailored to their exact specifications.
Following multiple rounds of rigorous testing and validation, our UV module not only met but exceeded AFRL’s expectations in terms of quality and performance.
This collaborative achievement was further recognized through publication in a leading international journal, with Violumas team members listed as co-authors.
This milestone underscores Violumas’ commitment to delivering world-class products and services to our partners in cutting-edge industries.
